The government of Monaco has announced that it has adopted an Act on the Protection of Personal Data that aims to conform its data protection laws with the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

The act applies to both the public and private sectors and will “contribute to the development of Monaco’s economic status by further safeguarding how personal data is used,” the government said in a news release.

Some of the main features of the act include, among others, the creation of a new personal data protection authority, the strengthening of individual rights and those concerning the personal data of minors, the establishment of a data protection officer, and increased sanctions and new administrative fines.

The adoption of the act means that Monaco can relaunch the process of requesting that the European Commission find that its data protection law is equivalent to the GDPR, which “would facilitate data transfers between Monaco and the countries of the European Union,” it said.
