    The Minnesota Department of Revenue reminds those impacted by the federal government shutdown of the various tax options available to lessen the negative effects of the shutdown. These include:

    • those who did not file an income tax return going back up to 3.5 years from the due date of the return to file and claim tax credits (e.g., child tax credit, renter's credit, working family credit) that they may qualify to receive but did not previously claim, even if they did not have a filing obligation;

    • filing an amended return to claim any credit that a taxpayer forgot to claim;

    • those having trouble making payments possibly qualifying for a hardship waiver;

    • those who chose advance payment of the child tax credit receiving their third and final payment earlier than expected; and

    • those not directly impacted by the shutdown helping others in need and taking advantage of tax savings by making charitable contributions in 2025 to reduce the amount of tax owed or increase a refund when filing their return in 2026.
