Allen P. Grunes and Maurice E. Stucke have announced the formation of The Konkurrenz Group, a Washington, D.C. based law firm focused on advising small businesses, Fortune 500 firms, and consumer advocacy groups on issues of competition law and policy, privacy, and consumer protection law. Roughly translated, “konkurrenz” is the German word for “competition.”

Grunes and Stucke began their collaborative relationship more than ten years ago, when they were attorneys at the Antitrust Division of the U.S. Department of Justice. While representing the Department of Justice, they successfully allowed the United States to recover—for the first time—its share of damages in a private class action settlement. They also co-authored an article—“Antitrust and the Marketplace of Ideas”—while at the Department of Justice.

Grunes is based in Washington, D.C., where he advises clients on mergers and acquisitions and other matters. He has extensive experience in the media and entertainment, telecommunications, and high-tech industries.

“The Konkurrenz Group is the latest chapter in Maurice and my long-standing collaboration,” stated Grunes. “We will continue to focus on mergers and civil non-merger work, as well as writing, speaking and testifying on issues of public importance.”

Stucke is an Associate Professor of Law at the University of Tennessee College of law, and is based in Knoxville. He writes extensively on competition policy, compliance, and behavioral economics, and has focused his current research on competition agencies in the U.S., Europe, and Asia.

“Allen and I are both passionate about how competition policy can impact our society,” Stucke said. “We are fortunate to already have interesting clients with challenging issues. Our aim is to continue to provide value and exceptional service to our clients.”
