Michael R. Bromwich, former Inspector General for the Department of Justice and settlement monitor in the Apple e-book case, has joined Robbins, Russell, Englert, Orseck, Untereiner and Sauber as senior counsel, the firm announced yesterday. He will focus his practice on corporate internal investigations and white-collar criminal defense.

Bromwich has practiced law for 35 years in the public and private sector, including serving as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York (1983-1987); Associate Counsel in the Office of Independent Counsel: Iran-Contra (1987-1989); and Inspector General of the Department of Justice (1994-1999). At the personal request of President Obama, he took over the country’s offshore drilling regulatory agency, following the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. From 1999 through 2010, Bromwich was a partner and Chair of the Internal Investigations, Compliance & Monitoring Group at Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson LLP.

Since October 2013, he has served as the court-appointed monitor overseeing Apple Inc.’s antitrust compliance policies, following a final judgment by the federal district court in New York City that the company orchestrated a conspiracy among publishers to fix retail prices for electronic books. Apple has unsuccessfully attempted to have Bromwich removed from this position.

A graduate of Harvard College (A.B.), the John F. Kennedy School of Government (M.P.P.), and Harvard Law School (J.D.), Bromwich is admitted to practice in Washington, D.C. and New York. He is the Managing Principal of The Bromwich Group, a strategic consulting firm that specializes in independent monitoring, crisis management, public relations, offshore energy, and law enforcement

Located in Washington, D.C., Robbins Russell is a litigation boutique that provides focused, efficient, and hands-on representation in high-stakes legal matters. Its practice concentrates on trial litigation, Supreme Court and general appellate litigation, government investigations and enforcement proceedings, and antitrust counseling and litigation.
