Rajesh De has returned to Mayer Brown as a partner in the firm’s Washington, D.C. office after holding a number of notable positions in the federal government. Most recently, De was the general counsel for the U.S. National Security Agency. He will lead Mayer Brown’s global Privacy & Security practice.

De began his career at the Department of Justice, as a trial lawyer in the Antitrust Division. He later held a number of senior positions in the federal government, including Staff Secretary and Deputy Assistant to the President of the United States and Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General in the Justice Department’s Office of Legal Policy. While serving as General Counsel for the NSA, De supervised approximately 100 attorneys and staff that handled litigation and provided legal advice across a number of areas, including cybersecurity and intellectual property. Prior to his most recent public service, De was a partner at Mayer Brown. He received his undergraduate degree from Harvard College and his law degree from Harvard Law School.

“We are thrilled to welcome Raj back to the firm,” stated leader of Mayer Brown’s global Litigation & Dispute Resolution practice, Michael Lackey. “Cybersecurity is an area of increasing strategic importance to many of our clients, as it is for the firm. Through his experiences at the NSA, White House, DOJ, various roles in Congress, and in the private sector, he has emerged as one of the foremost leaders in national security policy and law. His unparalleled knowledge of the complex regulatory landscape, combined with his enforcement experience, brings a new dimension to our global data protection, cybersecurity, crisis management and privacy practices.”

“With the rapid evolution of the cybersecurity landscape, it’s an exciting time to return to private practice,” De said. “Mayer Brown’s highly regarded reputation in handling complex, high-stakes privacy and cybersecurity matters, coupled with the firm’s impressive global platform and multidisciplinary team of privacy/cybersecurity lawyers, is especially appealing to me. I look forward to reuniting with this talented group of lawyers to help our clients navigate increasingly strategic cybersecurity issues affecting multi-national organizations.”
