Competition attorney Martin Rees has joined Squire Sanders as a partner in the firm’s Regulatory Practice Group, the firm announced. Rees will be based in the firm’s London office and joins Squire Sanders from DLA Piper. His addition is expected to further expand the firm’s global competition law practice.

Rees specializes in cartel investigations and appeals. He has substantial experience working in private practice, as well as in-house in the coal and brewing industries. His practice encompasses cartel and abuse of dominance cases before the United Kingdom Office of Fair Trading and European Commission, both on behalf of firms under investigation and on behalf of complainants; merger control advice before the U.K. and E.U. merger control authorities; and plaintiff and defendant litigation before the High Court in London. In addition, his practice includes appeals and references to the European Court General Court/Court of Justice, as well as major international arbitration proceedings involving competition law issues. He has an M.A. in jurisprudence from the University of Oxford.

“Martin will play a pivotal role in enhancing our distinctive global cartel and competition litigation practice and our ability to represent clients in government investigations and related civil litigation that span the Atlantic,” noted Mark Botti, Washington DC partner and co-leader of Squire Sanders’ competition law practice.

Brian Hartnett, co-leader of the firm’s competition law practice and managing partner of the Brussels office, commented: “Martin is one of the leading lawyers in his field and we are delighted to welcome a partner of his pedigree to the firm. By adding his skills to our growing Asian competition practice and existing practices in Europe and the U.S., we will be reaching our goal of having one of the premier global competition practices.”

Squire Sanders is a global law with over 1,300 attorneys located in 39 offices in 19 countries across North America, Latin America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia Pacific. Founded in 1890, the firm represents clients in a variety of matters, including governmental and regulatory issues, contracts, transactional matters, banking and financial services, environmental issues, and commercial litigation.
