Greensfelder, Hemker & Gale, P.C. has announced the loss of prominent franchise attorney John R.F. Baer, who died on January 29, 2015.
A longtime leader of the ABA Forum on Franchising and the IBA International Franchising Committee, Baer was an officer and former managing partner of Greensfelder’s Chicago office, according to the announcement.
From 2003 to 2006, he was a member of the Forum on Franchising’s Governing Committee and was a regular speaker at the group’s annual meetings. In 2011 and 2012, he served as Chair of the International Franchising Committee of the International Bar Association. Baer was chair of the Illinois Attorney General’s Franchise Advisory Board from 1996 to 2012 and a member of the Industry Advisory Committee to the North American Securities Administrators Association’s Franchise Project Group from 2007 to 2010.
A frequent speaker and writer on franchise and distribution law topics, he served as editor of the ABA Franchise Lawyer, the IBA International Journal of Franchising Law, and the CCH Sales Representative Law Guide.
In 2009, Baer was named the first recipient of the Lewis G. Rudnick Award, the Forum on Franchising’s “lifetime achievement award,” in recognition of his contributions to the development of the Forum and franchise law as a discipline. His representation of companies involved in franchising and distribution earned him frequent recognition from publications such as Chambers, which described him as “astute and excellent,” Best Lawyers in America, and Franchise Times.
“John was an outstanding attorney and played a key role in the growth of our Chicago office,” said Greensfelder President Vince Garozzo. “He was a leader, a mentor, and a good friend. John will be greatly missed.”
