FTC deputy assistant director Jonathan Klarfeld will be joining the Washington, D.C. office of Ropes & Gray—a global corporate law firm—in August, according to a May 19 announcement. With 13 years of experience at the FTC, and having substantial involvement in a number of merger challenges and investigations, Klarfeld will be joining the firm as a partner in the firm’s antitrust practice.

Currently, Klarfeld is the deputy assistant director of the Mergers I division in the FTC’s Bureau of Competition. He has led various merger and non-merger divisions at the FTC and has managed numerous merger and acquisition antitrust investigations involving medical devices and testing, pharmaceutical, hospital, high technology, food products, and defense industries.

“Jonathan Klarfeld brings an unparalleled depth of knowledge and experience from the trenches that will be of enormous benefit to clients, just as we are experiencing a surge in merger activity around the world, stated head of Ropes & Gray’s antitrust practice, Mark Popofsky. “We are thrilled to welcome Jonathan to our premier team of antitrust lawyers at Ropes & Gray.”

Klarfeld began his legal career as a litigation associate at Reboul, MacMurray, Hewitt, Maynard & Kristol, a firm that has subsequently become a part of Ropes & Gray. He also was a judicial law clerk in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York and worked as a special assistant U.S. attorney in the District of Columbia’s U.S. Attorney’s Office.

“I am excited to join the active and growing antitrust practice at Ropes & Gray and the opportunity to work alongside some of the most talented antitrust lawyers I have come up against during my years of government service,” stated Klarfeld.

Ropes & Gray employs over 1,100 attorneys in 11 cities across the globe, including offices in New York, Washington, D.C., Boston, Chicago, San Francisco, Silicon Valley, London, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Tokyo, and Seoul.
