Former FTC Bureau of Competition Deputy Director Peter J. Levitas has joined Arnold & Porter as a partner in its antitrust group, the law firm has announced. Levitas works out of the firm’s Washington, D.C. office.

As Deputy Director for four years at the Bureau of Competition, Levitas headed the FTC’s Mergers 1, Health Care, and Anticompetitive Practices divisions, as well as the FTC’s Northeast Regional Office in New York. Levitas supervised investigations and related litigation in merger and conduct cases across a wide range of industries, particularly in the health care, pharmaceutical, and technology sectors. His experience included serving as lead negotiator in discussions leading to settlement of litigation against Intel and to resolution of investigations of Google earlier this year.

Prior to his work for the FTC, Levitas served as Counsel for the Washington, D.C. firm Dickstein Shapiro LLP, where he represented companies subject to state and federal civil investigations concerning antitrust, competition, and consumer protection matters. He also worked for seven years as Staff Director and Chief Counsel to the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on Antitrust, Competition Policy and Consumer Rights, and for more than five years as a trial attorney for the Department of Justice Antitrust Division, where he helped prosecute price fixing cases.

Arnold & Porter LLP is an international law firm with more than 800 lawyers located in offices in Brussels, Denver, London, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Silicon Valley, and Washington, D.C.
