Former Department of Justice Antitrust Division litigator Lawrence Buterman has joined Latham & Watkins LLP as a partner in the firm’s D.C. and New York offices. Buterman’s hire will bolster the firm’s global antitrust and competition capabilities given his nationally-recognized trial experience, the firm stated.

Prior to joining Latham & Watkins, Buterman clerked for the Honorable Joel M. Flaum, when he was Chief Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. He was also an associate and counsel in private practice before joining the Justice Department in 2010. Buterman worked in the Antitrust Division’s Networks and Technology Enforcement Section.

“Larry’s first-chair antitrust credentials are stellar,” stated Co-Chair of the firm’s Global Antitrust and Competition Practice Group, Michael Egge. “In the antitrust practice, compared with other areas of litigation, trials are relatively rare, making first-chair antitrust lawyers with substantial trial experience even more rare. Larry boasts high-profile victories throughout his career, as well as a deep understanding of the government’s priorities and practices related to antitrust enforcement.”

Buterman joins approximately 140 lawyers in Latham & Watkins’ global antitrust and competition practice. The firm assists clients in all aspects of antitrust practice, including business conduct investigations, merger clearance, and private and public antitrust litigation.

“I am thrilled to be joining Latham’s highly regarded antitrust team,” said Buterman. “Latham’s trial capabilities are well-known at the DOJ, which was part of my attraction to Latham.”
