Former Chief Counselor for Privacy at the Office of Budget and Management, Peter Swire, has joined Alston & Bird’s Privacy & Data Security Practice. He will serve as Senior Counsel in the firm’s Atlanta office, according to a recent announcement.
To date, Swire remains the only individual to have U.S. government-wide responsibility for privacy policy. As President Clinton’s Chief Counselor for Privacy, he was responsible for being the White House lead for the HIPAA Privacy Rule, assisting in negotiating the Safe Harbor agreement with the European Union, and chairing a 15-agency White House Working Group that focused on updating wiretap law. Swire received his undergraduate degree from Princeton University and his law degree from Yale University.
“Peter is one of the world’s foremost leaders in privacy and security issues,” stated co-chair of the firm’s Privacy & Data Security Practice, James A. Harvey. “For more than two decades, he has been a primary participant in the complex struggle to balance privacy and security rights inside and outside of government.”
