Organized labor’s “concentrated clout” in the utilities sector “comes at a time when utilities are even less popular than politicians and lawyers.”

In this month’s Labor Pulse, Jim Castagnera uses the July 4, 2026 Philadelphia Electric Company strike, which settled in just three days, to think about the utilities sector as a uniquely positioned contemporary entry point for labor activism. “The public-utilities industry,” he observes, “sits at the center of a confluence of controversial issues: climate change, data centers, and that ever-present gorilla in our living rooms, the cost of living.”

Noting the cardinal priorities for labor of organizing and power-building, Jim asks, “But what of the public good? Should and will the IBEW and its sister unions recognize and acknowledge an obligation to compel the power companies to live up to their civic responsibilities?”

To learn more about these developments, enjoy Jim’s latest Labor Pulse article, “A ‘Perfect Storm’ and a PECO Strike: Where Do They Point?”
