The Jersey Government has said taxpayers wishing to file joint tax returns should opt in by September 30, 2026.

Jersey introduced independent taxation for married couples and those in a civil partnership from January 1, 2026. However, taxpayers who are married or in a civil partnership may be able to continue to file a single tax return jointly, despite newly being taxed independently.

Married couples or those in a civil partnership may opt to file a single return by applying online at gov.je/IndependentTax; or by picking up a form at their local parish hall or at the Government of Jersey building on Union Street.

The Minister for Treasury and Resources, Alan Maclean, said: "Independent Taxation ensures all couples are treated equally, regardless of their marital status. We recognize that some islanders may prefer to continue filing a joint return, particularly those who have managed their tax affairs in the same way for many years. We have listened to these concerns and provided eligible couples with an option to continue filing jointly."

"Independent Taxation is an important reform that creates a fairer and more consistent tax system. At the same time, we want to give couples flexibility and choice in how they manage their tax."
