Italy's Council of Ministers has approved tax relief measures in response to high energy prices.

The cabinet approved a legislative decree and an interministerial decree containing provisions to reduce, for a period of twenty days starting March 19, the tax burden on diesel, gasoline, and LPG. The measure will result in a price reduction of EUR0.25 per liter for diesel and gasoline and EUR0.12 per kilo for LPG.

The Government will also put in price measures to prevent speculation and profiteering. For three months, oil companies will be required to communicate and publish their recommended prices, which will be monitored.

Further, tax relief will be provided to the road haulage sector through the provision of a tax credit for increased expenditure in March, April, and May compared with fuel prices in February 2026. The fisheries sector, meanwhile, will be eligible for a special tax credit of up to 20 percent of fuel costs incurred in March, April, and May 2026.
