Richard T. Hamilton, Jr., a former Department of Justice Antitrust Division prosecutor, has joined Ulmer & Berne LLP as a partner in its Cleveland office, the law firm has announced. Hamilton will chair the firm’s White Collar practice group.

Hamilton joins the firm from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Ohio. Over the course of a 20-plus-year career as a trial attorney with the Department of Justice Antitrust Division and the Northern District of Ohio, Hamilton conducted complex international, national, and local criminal investigations and prosecutions for violations of the Sherman Act and other federal laws, including cases involving the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, money laundering, and multi-defendant conspiracies.

His antitrust experience included leading three separate price fixing investigations of individuals and corporations involved in the air cargo industry, resulting in the indictment of two former Air France executives. He also headed the investigation and prosecution of 16 individual and corporate participants in the scrap metal industry for criminal price fixing, bid rigging, market allocation, wire fraud, obstruction of justice, and perjury, culminating in more than $16 million in criminal fines, payment of restitution to victims, and significant prison sentences for certain individuals. An investigation of the magazine distribution industry he developed and led ballooned from a local investigation of market monopolization into a nationwide examination of more than 400 regional and national distributors, as well as magazine publishers and other industry suppliers. As a trial attorney with the Northern District of Ohio, Hamilton prosecuted a wide range of crimes as part of its Major and Cyber Crimes Unit.

Hamilton received an LL.M. degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Law in 1988, and a J.D. from Duquesne University School of Law in 1987.

Ulmer & Berne LLP is a full-service law firm with offices in Chicago, Cincinnati, Cleveland, and Columbus.
