Jenner & Block announced on November 1 that Thomas J. Perrelli, the former Associate Attorney General at the U.S. Department of Justice, is re-joining the firm as a partner in its Washington, D.C. office.

Perrelli will lead Jenner & Block’s newly formed Government Controversies and Public Policy Litigation practice group. The group will focus on "advising clients and their leaders on the most intractable problems at the intersection of law, law enforcement and government regulation," according to the announcement. As the third highest-ranking official at the Department of Justice from 2009 until his departure in March, Perrelli was responsible for the Department’s Civil, Antitrust, Civil Rights, Environment and Natural Resources and Tax Divisions, among other programs, it was noted.

At the time he was nominated and confirmed to serve as the Associate Attorney General in 2009, Perrelli had been serving as the Managing Partner of Jenner & Block’s Washington office. He began practicing law as an associate at the firm in 1992. He took a break from Jenner & Block in 1997 to serve in the Clinton Administration's Justice Department and returned to the firm in 2001, where he remained for the next eight years. During that time, his practice focused on copyright, media, and constitutional litigation, as well as complex litigation with a public policy or regulatory component, according to the announcement.
