Nathaniel Edmonds, a former Assistant Chief of the Fraud Section, Foreign Corrupt Practices Act Unit in the Criminal Division of the U.S. Department of Justice, has joined Paul Hastings LLP as a partner in the law firm’s Global Compliance and Disputes practice, the law firm has announced. Edmonds will work out of the firm’s Washington, D.C. office.
As Assistant Chief, Edmonds directly supervised up to half of the Department’s transnational bribery investigations and assisted in the supervision of all Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) cases in the United States. He also helped draft the FCPA guidance document A Resource Guide to the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, published in November 2012 by the Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission. In addition, Edmonds served as part of the U.S. delegation to the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development’s Working Group on Bribery and the U.S.-China Joint Liaison Group’s Anti-Corruption Working Group. As an attorney in the Department of Justice’s Fraud Section, Edmonds handled numerous complex economic criminal investigations and jury trials.
At Paul Hastings, Edmonds advises companies on the development and maintenance of anti-corruption compliance programs and on regulatory compliance matters around the world, including FCPA and anti-corruption investigations, risk assessments, and due diligence. Edmonds also assists companies in determining the scope of potential liability stemming from improper payments and in responding to potential enforcement actions by U.S. and foreign authorities.
“Within the FCPA bar, there are few practitioners with Nat’s combination of investigative experience, technical and legal expertise, and understanding of the international legal and regulatory environment,” said William Sullivan, global chair of Paul Hastings’ Litigation practice. “In an environment where compliance issues have become increasingly important worldwide, Nat’s experience working with law enforcement officials from six continents will allow him to distinguish himself to the growing number of companies facing investigations by multiple enforcement agencies around the world.”
“Nat’s prosecutorial experience and connections to US government agencies will complement the diverse and extensive range of regulatory and enforcement experts in our DC office and across our global network,” said Barbara Brown, chair of Paul Hastings’ Washington, D.C. office. “We are looking forward to working with Nat to advise our clients on a range of compliance issues and how best to address the challenges facing companies operating internationally.”
Edmonds received his J.D. degree in 2002 from the University of Chicago Law School, and his A.B. degree from Princeton University in 1995. Edmonds has taught “Federal Fraud Prosecution: Theory and Practice” as an adjunct professor at Georgetown University Law Center.
