Former enforcement official Melanie Sabo will bring nearly 25 years of antitrust experience to her new post as partner with Kilpatrick Townsend’s internationally-ranked Antitrust Team, according to an April 23 announcement.
For the past six years, Sabo has served as the FTC’s Assistant Director of the Anticompetitive Practices Division. From 1993 through 1998, she worked as a trial attorney in the Department of Justice Antitrust Division.
"She will be able to offer our clients FTC expertise at the highest level," said Connie Robinson, Co-Chair of Kilpatrick Townsend’s Antitrust Team. "Melanie’s knowledge gained from handling numerous ‘front page’ antitrust FTC matters will be absolutely invaluable. I don’t think there is a key issue she hasn’t encountered, particularly in the high-tech area."
While at the FTC, Sabo handled the agency’s most significant investigations and enforcement actions relating to anticompetitive conduct, according to the firm. With a staff of 32 lawyers, she was responsible for all aspects of investigating leads, managing cases, negotiating consents, and litigating matters involving monopolization, monopoly maintenance, exclusive dealing, horizontal restraints, invitations to collude, standard-setting organizations, Section 5 of the FTC Act, and exemptions and immunities.
As a trial attorney with the Antitrust Division, Sabo worked on several high-profile mergers and price-fixing investigations. She represented the United States in two criminal trials and several Tunney Act proceedings.
Earlier in her career, Sabo worked in private practice. As a partner with K & L Gates, she led all aspects of numerous merger investigations and defended clients involved in multi-state antitrust investigations and cartel matters. Sabo also served as counsel for King & Spalding’s Litigation & Trade Practice Group, where she focused on litigation, white-collar criminal defense, and antitrust counseling. She is a graduate of Boston University (B.S., Biomedical Engineering) and the University of Michigan Law School.
Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton, LLP is a full service law firm, with 19 offices worldwide, including 14 in the United States.
