Albert A. (“Bert”) Foer, President and Founder of the American Antitrust Institute (AAI), announced his intention to retire as President of the AAI on December 31, 2014. Speaking at the AAI’s 7th Annual Private Enforcement Conference and Awards Dinner at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., on December 3, Foer stated that he would be age 70 next August and wanted more time to pursue his diverse interests. He expressed gratitude that the AAI had attained a position of internal strength where his departure did not have to be disruptive.
“The AAI has been incredibly effective and successful in its first 15 years because of the support of the antitrust community, offering its collective wisdom, experience, willingness to volunteer precious time, and financial support of our programs,” Foer stated.
He stated that the AAI staff of six could not have accomplished what it has done without its Advisory Board Members, Senior Fellows, Research Fellows, and supporters throughout the antitrust community. Foer noted that the AAI Board of Directors, under Chairman Bob Skitol, is forming a search and transition committee and retained a national consulting company that specializes in succession planning for nonprofits. Foer will remain part-time with the AAI for at least two years after the new President is on board as a Senior Fellow on special assignments such as exploring growth opportunities in AAI’s international work. He indicated that he would share more information about his future plans in 2014.
His career has included private law practice at Hogan & Hartson and Jackson & Campbell in Washington, D.C. He served as Assistant Director and Acting Deputy Director of the FTC’s Bureau of Competition and as the chief executive officer of a mid-size chain of jewelry stores for 12 years. Foer has also taught antitrust law to undergraduate and graduate business school students.
Foer has published numerous articles, book chapters, and reviews relating to competition policy. He is the editor of the Next Antitrust Agenda and co-editor of the International Handbook on Private Enforcement of Competition Law and of Private Enforcement of Antitrust Law in the United States.
Foer earned his J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School, where he was an associate law review editor. He also earned an M.A. in political science from Washington University and a B.A. from Brandeis University.
