Cybersecurity Policy Report, House OKs Intelligence Authorization Bill, (Jul 18, 2019)
Organizations Mentioned:Director of National Intelligence
An intelligence authorization bill that would, among other things, require the intelligence community to report on threats to U.S. 5G networks from overseas telecom equipment suppliers cleared the House late yesterday on a 397-31 vote.
The Damon Paul Nelson and Matthew Young Pollard Intelligence Authorization Act for fiscal year 2020 (HR 3494) would direct the Office of the Director of National Intelligence to report to lawmakers on "the threat to the national security of the United States posed by the global and regional adoption of fifth-generation wireless network . . . technology built by foreign companies," according to the text of the bill and an Intelligence Committee report accompanying it.
The bill also included amendments that would direct the FCC and Department of Homeland Security to ferret out and neutralize cell-site simulators installed by "foreign entities" (CPR, July 17).
Another amendment approved by the House would establish a two-year pilot program within the Energy Department's national laboratories to study ways to "isolate and defend industrial control systems" used in the electric grid.
