Cybersecurity Policy Report, FTC to Send More than $31M in Refund Checks in LifeLock Case, (Oct 9, 2019)

The Federal Trade Commission will begin sending more than 1 million refund checks to consumers who were customers of identity theft protection firm LifeLock, Inc., between 2012 and 2020 but who did not receive payments from a class action settlement. LifeLock's $100 million settlement with the FTC in 2015 addressed allegations the company had violated a 2010 court order and settlement with the FTC that prohibited the firm from engaging in deceptive advertising and required it to secure the personal information of its customers. Of that $100 million, $68 million was allocated to the class action settlement, with the proviso "that any money not received by consumers in the class action settlement or through settlements between LifeLock and state attorneys general would go to the FTC to provide consumer refunds," the FTC said. The agency said the total remainder it is distributing is more than $31 million, and the average amount of the checks is about $29.
