Orange B may not be used as a color additive in food in the United States without a certification; the FDA concluded that the authorized use of Orange B has been abandoned and that the color additive listing for Orange B was outdated and unnecessary.
The FDA issued an order to repeal the color additive regulation that allows for the use of Orange B for coloring the casings or surfaces of frankfurters and sausages. The agency determined that the authorized use of Orange B has been abandoned, and it concluded that the color additive regulation the outdated and unnecessary. Therefore, FDA is revoking the authorized use in food of Orange B in the color additive regulations (Final Rule, 91 Fed. Reg. 46276 (July 23, 2026)).
Dates. This order is effective September 8, 2026.
