The FDA concluded that the data establish the safety and utility of ethyl cellulose as a matrix scaffolding in tracers.

The FDA amended the regulations for food additives permitted in feed and drinking water of animals to provide for the safe use of ethyl cellulose as a matrix scaffolding for tracers, and the ethyl cellulose shall not exceed 80 percent of the tracer. The action is in response to a food additive petition filed by Micro-Tracers, Inc. The FDA noted that the use of the food additive, ethyl cellulose, as a component of the tracer is a more accurate characterization of the food additive than as proposed in the petition (the food additive as a component of complete feed). Therefore, the intended use rate of the food additive has been recharacterized as a percentage of the tracer (Final Rule, 89 Fed. Reg. 48507 (June 7, 2024)).

Dates. This rule is effective June 7, 2024.
