Global Daily Tax News, EU Hints At Tariffs On US Exports, Following Steel Decision, (Feb 13, 2025)
Following confirmation from the US Administration that it will proceed with new tariffs on imported steel and aluminum, the European Union has said it will respond with countermeasures.
The tariffs were confirmed on February 10, 2025, following comments a day earlier from US President Donald Trump.
European Commission President President Ursula von der Leyen said:
"I deeply regret the US decision to impose tariffs on European steel and aluminum exports. Tariffs are taxes – bad for business, worse for consumers. Unjustified tariffs on the EU will not go unanswered – they will trigger firm and proportionate countermeasures."
"The EU will act to safeguard its economic interests. We will protect our workers, businesses and consumers."
