A delegation of members of Parliament (MEPs) from the Special Committee on the European Democracy Shield (EUDS) travelled to the U.S. earlier this week to meet with their counterparts in Washington D.C. and New York to discuss digital challenges, cyber defense, and information integrity.
In a press release yesterday, the European Parliament said that the findings of the mission will help shape the final report of the EUDS, which is expected to be adopted this summer. Specifically, the delegation engaged in discussions in Washington with senior officials from the U.S. Justice Department, the FBI, think tanks, non-governmental organizations, and media outlets aimed at strengthening transatlantic dialogue and reaffirming shared democratic values. During their exchanges with the DoJ and FBI, the MEPs shared best practices on combatting hybrid threats, with an emphasis on the importance of greater cooperation in cyber defense and counterintelligence operations. The also met with members of the U.S. House Judiciary Committee to discuss EU digital legislation and recent regulator challenges.
In New York, the MEPs were briefed on the current political landscape in the United Nations, including a meeting with Under Secretary General–global communications Melissa Fleming to discuss information integrity, online platform responsibilities, and the protection of minors online.
“It was important for our parliamentary delegation to meet with our U.S. counterparts to insist on the importance of our sovereign choices and to hear about the necessity to keep a strong transatlantic partnership,” said Nathalie Loiseau, chair of EUDS and head of the delegation. “During our visit to the United Nations, we learned more about the global efforts to promote information integrity and to develop AI for humanity.”
