The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) announced several recent developments. The federal agency entered into a $5,000 conciliation agreement with an Ohio healthcare facility to resolve a charge of race discrimination in violation of Title VII. In an unrelated development, the EEOC sued the operator of a Pennsylvania hotel to enforce the terms of a conciliation agreement. The EEOC also issued a press release promoting its efforts to defend religious liberty of employees.

Racial discrimination. Progressive North Ridgeville, LLC, which operates a healthcare facility in North Ridgeville, Ohio, entered into a $5,000 conciliation agreement with the EEOC to resolve a race discrimination charge. The federal agency said it had found reasonable cause to believe the facility violated Title VII by firing an employee because of her race. In addition to monetary relief, the conciliation agreement requires Progressive North Ridgeville to provide Title VII training to all its management, administrative, and human resources employees involved in hiring, firing, and disciplining employees in Northeast Ohio.

Conciliation enforcement. The EEOC said it sued the operator of a hotel in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, to enforce the terms of a conciliation agreement. The lawsuit alleges that SSN Hotel Management, LLC and SSN Carlisle, LLC, dba American Inn Carlisle, failed to make monetary payments required as part of a conciliation agreement that the federal agency had previously struck with them. The EEOC had found reasonable cause to support allegations of race discrimination and retaliation at the hotel. In August 2024, the companies settled the charge by conciliation agreement, which required American Inn to make timely monthly payments to the complainant and take other remedial actions. However, the hotel has failed to make the required monetary payments and has ignored warnings of non-compliance, the EEOC said.

The EEOC filed its lawsuit in the Middle District of Pennsylvania; the case is No. 1:25-cv-01491.

Religious liberty. The EEOC issued a press release promoting its efforts over the first 200 days of the second Trump administration to defend religious liberty of employees. The press release touts actions by the federal agency that it said were aimed to address religious discrimination, alleged antisemitism, and alleged anti-Christian bias in the workplace.
