The four leading vendors of automated license plate recognition (ALPR) systems should send their chief executive officers to testify next week at a Senate subcommittee hearing that will explore the privacy implications of ALPR technology, Sen. Josh Hawley (R., Mo.) said today.

Sen. Hawley announced in a social media post that he had invited the CEOs of Flock Safety, Motorola Solutions, Inc., Verkada, Inc., and Axon Enterprise, Inc., to testify next Wednesday before the Senate Judiciary Committee’s crime and counterterrorism subcommittee, of which Sen. Hawley is chair.

The hearing, titled “Always Watching: Flock’s Nationwide AI Surveillance Network,” is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m. in Room 562 of the Dirksen Senate Office Building.

Sen. Hawley launched an investigation into the privacy implications of ALPR systems in late August. He has written to the CEOs of the four top ALPR vendors requesting information about user training, data retention, and camera placement, among other things (CPR, Sept. 8).
