The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (OPC) has released its annual report: Trust, innovation, and protecting the fundamental right to privacy in the digital age, which highlights the global privacy trends reflected in the OPC’s work as well as its activities and achievements in its efforts to “protect and promote Canadians’ fundamental right to privacy.”

The OPC news release explains that the report offers information on the Commissioner’s strategic priorities over the next three years which will “focus on issues where the OPC can have the greatest impact, and where the greatest risks lie if they are not addressed—protecting and promoting privacy with maximum impact; addressing and advocating for privacy in this time of technological change; and championing children’s rights.”

The report also details investigations that “exemplify the risks and the importance of protecting the fundamental right to privacy in the digital era,” including the OPC’s investigation into Aylo, an operator of adult content websites, which found “significant problems that allowed highly sensitive and intimate content to be posted online without the direct knowledge or consent of those depicted.”

Other points of interest in the report include, among other things: 1,113 complaints were related to the Privacy Act; 561 breach reports came from federal institutions; 25% of all complaints accepted under the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), Canada’s federal private-sector privacy law, were against businesses in the financial sector; and breach reports showed that “third-party service providers, particularly IT and software providers, were targeted more frequently by threat actors.”
