The tokenization technology would work with an existing platform that standardizes the protocol by which member firms link to all NYSE markets.
The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) announced that it plans to facilitate blockchain-based trading of securities. Specifically, NYSE said that it will seek regulatory approvals to enable “trading and on-chain settlement of tokenized securities” in a manner that will integrate with an existing NYSE platform that allows the exchange’s member firms to use a single protocol to access all NYSE equities and options markets.
“We are leading the industry toward fully on-chain solutions, grounded in the unmatched protections and high regulatory standards that position us to marry trust with state-of-the-art technology,” said Lynn Martin, President, NYSE Group via press release. “Harnessing our expertise to reinvent market infrastructure is how we’ll meet and shape the demands of a digital future.”
According to NYSE, the new platform will provide “tokenized trading experiences” in addition to expanding trading operations on a 24/7 basis, enable instant settlement, dollar-sized orders, and “stablecoin-based funding.” The new platform also will leverage NYSE’s Pillar platform, which provides a standardized protocol linking NYSE markets and which may enable the use of multiple chains for settlement and custody.
With respect to tokenized securities, NYSE said that tokenized shares would be interchangeable with non-tokenized shares. “Tokenized shareholders will participate in traditional shareholder dividends and governance rights,” added NYSE’s press release. “The venue is designed to align with established principles for market structure, with distribution via non-discriminatory access to all qualified broker-dealers.”
NYSE said its larger plans for expanding its digital operations include 24/7 trading and also potentially the use of tokenized collateral. NYSE said it is already working with banks to enable tokenized deposits that may offer money management solutions beyond normal banking hours and across multiple jurisdictions and time zones.
