The West Virginia state Senate this week passed a bill that would ban use of certain products and apps deemed unsafe or high risk on government systems.

According to SB 426, the prohibition would apply to apply to all state agencies, local government entities, and institutions of higher education. The bill provides that unsafe platforms, services, applications, programs, or products be restricted on all government systems, services, networks, devices, or locations. This prohibition would specifically include TikTok.

"The Legislature hereby finds and declares that it is in the best interest of the citizens of West Virginia and to national security to enact measures designed to safeguard against untrustworthy and high-risk technology and to block such technology from interfering with or damaging critical state networks and infrastructure," according to the bill.

The bill has been referred to the House Judiciary Committee.
