Antitrust Law Daily Wrap Up, ANTITRUST NEWS: European Commission Approves Honeywell’s Acquisition of Intermec, (Jun 14, 2013)
Organizations Mentioned:Honeywell | Intermec
By Tobias J. Gillett, J.D., LL.M.
The European Commission has approved technology manufacturer Honeywell’s acquisition of Intermec, a supplier of barcode scanners, barcode printers, mobile computers, radio-frequencies identification systems, voice recognition systems, and lifecycle services, the agency has announced.
The EC focused on certain markets in which the companies’ activities overlapped, including the markets for ruggedized mobile computers, barcode scanners, and scanning engines, in the European Economic Area. The Commission concluded that the combined entity would continue to face strong competition in those markets following the proposed transaction.
The transaction would not raise vertical competition concerns, the Commission found, including in the market for the licensing of voice recognition software for use in devices with voice recognition capabilities. The market contained alternative suppliers for the software, and Honeywell “currently has very limited presence in the downstream market for the supply of voice recognition software.”
