Canada’s Competition Bureau and the Competition Bureau of India have entered into a memorandum of understanding aimed at enhancing cooperation between the two agencies and increasing their ability to address cross-border competition enforcement matters.

According to agreement, the purpose of the memorandum is “to enhance the partnership of the Participants by providing a framework for their cooperation in the fields of competition law and policy, including enforcement.”

Both countries have agreed to: (1) keep the other informed of significant developments in competition laws, enforcement, and policy; (2) share competition law enforcement and policy experience; (3) work together in technical cooperation activities, such as training courses and assistance in understanding competition policy among government agencies and other institutions; (4) cooperate and coordinate enforcement activities when investigating the same or related matters; and (5) notify the other agency of enforcement activities that could affect the other participant’s interests.

“This understanding stems from what is already a strong relationship with India’s competition authority, built on our shared interest in ensuring that businesses operate on a level playing field and that consumers benefit from lower prices and more choices in the marketplace,” stated Commissioner of Competition John Pecman. “I look forward to continuing collaboration with the CCI as our agencies pursue these common goals.”
