Officials from the Canada Competition Bureau met with senior officials from China’s State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission (SASAC) in Ottawa in an effort to facilitate future communication and collaboration between the agencies, the Bureau announced today.

Commissioner of Competition John Pecman and other senior Bureau officials held discussions with a SASAC delegation led by Vice Chairman Huang Shuhe. The meeting allowed the agencies to share information about their respective processes, with an aim to supporting efficient and effective reviews of mergers and acquisitions involving China’s state-owned enterprises.

Topics discussed during the meeting included the Bureau’s merger review process and enforcement approach under the Competition Act, as well as SASAC’s role and policies relating to China’s state-owned investments in Canada.

The meeting is seen in Canada as an important step in building a relationship with SASAC to facilitate dialogue and cooperation in the future. International cooperation assists the Bureau in the effective enforcement and administration of the Competition Act, to the benefit of consumers and businesses. The meeting reflects the Bureau’s commitment to increasing international cooperation, communication and trust between agencies through face-to-face conversations, according to the Competition Bureau.
