The American Antitrust Institute (AAI) has released a summary of the proceedings of its 14th Annual Energy Roundtable, which was held on May 6, 2014 at the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) in Arlington, Virginia.
This year's roundtable examined economic shifts, such as the surge in the use of shale gas, and regulatory changes, such as federal initiatives to reduce greenhouse gases, and how these changes would shape investment decisions by investor-owned utilities, municipal and cooperative utilities, merchant generators, and others.
Executive branch regulatory initiatives regarding reducing carbon emissions were discussed, as were non-environmental initiatives, such as an FERC order permitting greater information sharing between gas pipelines and transmission owners. Panelists discussed changes in power generation and the future of coal-fired generation, pricing issues, smart-grid technologies and climate change.
The AAI’s Annual Energy Roundtable seeks to bring together various stakeholders to discuss current competition policy issues in electricity markets, particularly the intersection between antitrust and regulation. More than 40 individuals from academia, advocacy, consulting, government, industry, and trade associations participated in the Roundtable.
The American Antitrust Institute is an independent, Washington-based non-profit education, research, and advocacy organization. Its stated mission is to increase the role of competition, assure that competition works in the interests of consumers, and challenge abuses of concentrated economic power in the American and world economy.
