By Jody Coultas, J.D.
Dr. Michael Grenfell has been appointed to the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) board as the new Executive Director for Enforcement. This shift in senior management comes after former Executive Director Sonya Branch departed the CMA to serve as General Counsel for the Bank of England.
Dr. Grenfell currently serves as Senior Director for Sector Regulation and Concurrency at the CMA. He has 25 years of experience as a competition lawyer in leading City and international law firms.
“I am delighted that we have appointed someone of such proven calibre as Michael. I look forward to the quality of advice and insight he will bring to the table,” said CMA Chairman David Currie.
Alex Chisholm, CMA Chief Executive, said: “Michael is a great addition to the senior executive team, having already made an outstanding contribution to the work of the CMA so far. I am confident, as he steps up into his new role, that he will have real impact in driving through our enforcement work, a key priority area for the organisation.”
Dr. Grenfell will work closely with other regulatory and enforcement bodies both in the UK and internationally, including consumer bodies, academics, consultants in the legal, economic, and business community. Dr. Grenfell will also join the CMA’s Senior Executive Team and will sit on the CMA Board.
The CMA will begin an open recruitment for the now vacant position of Senior Director for Sector Regulation.
