The European Commission (EC) has approved under the European Union (EU) merger regulation the acquisition of Baxalta Inc. by Shire plc, the agency announced yesterday.
Baxalta, a global pharmaceutical company incorporated in the United States, specializes in rare diseases and advancing innovative therapies in haemotology, immunology, and oncology. Shire, a Jersey-based and Irish-headquartered global biopharmaceutical company, is active in neuroscience, gastrointestinal and internal medicine, ophthalmics, and rare diseases.
Because both companies focus on the development of treatments for specific rare diseases but target different diseases with dissimilar therapeutic indications, the EC concluded that their businesses are complimentary and the proposed acquisition would raise no competition concerns.
