Fighting tailwinds, the U.S. economy needs AI to deliver real productivity increases for continued growth.

Massive buildout by the high-tech sector relating to artificial intelligence (AI) is giving the U.S. economy a significant boost, but that could be short-lived if AI fails to deliver actual productivity increases, analysts said at the 2026 Morningstar Investment Conference.

With private investment flocking to AI, other sectors have seen a decline in investment, raising the risk of downturn in the face of geopolitical conflict, high interest rates, and high household spending on basic necessities.

Another concern is AI’s impact on labor. While analysts are not currently seeing strong evidence of worker displacement, it remains a closely watched possibility.

In a new Vital Briefing, Wolters Kluwer Senior Legal Analyst Lene Powell discusses Morningstar analysts’ economic outlook in light of high-tech investment, U.S. involvement in geopolitical conflicts, and more.
