Complaints allege that the warning system misrepresents the seat belt status for passengers in the second and third rows.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has opened a preliminary evaluation into potential defects in the rear passenger seat belt warning system of 2023-2024 Honda Pilot vehicles. The estimated population is 142,572 vehicles (NHTSA ODI Investigation, No. PE25017 (Oct. 28, 2025)).

According to NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation (ODI), the rear seat belt warning system in the subject vehicles may provide inaccurate feedback to the driver. Specifically, the system has been reported to issue both false positive and false negative alerts regarding the seat belt status of rear passengers.

ODI has received six complaints related to this issue. No crashes, fires, injuries, or fatalities have been associated with the reported incidents. The complaints indicate that the warning system may misrepresent the seat belt status for passengers in both the second and third rows, potentially leading drivers to ignore warnings or mistakenly believe that passengers are properly restrained.

The investigation aims to assess the scope and severity of the issue and determine whether it poses a safety risk, particularly for children in the rear rows. The third row is of particular concern due to limited driver visibility. ODI will continue to gather and analyze data to evaluate whether further action is warranted.
